Cloud computing 'still intimidates many'
Nearly 40 per cent of IT professionals are still generally confused by the term 'cloud computing', while 33 per cent believe it is more hype than substance, a new survey has discovered.
The survey, carried out by Proofpoint, found that many people are put off by the money-saving options offered by the likes of resource scheduling software because they find it quite intimidating.
Gary Steele, the chief executive officer of Proofpoint, said that any great paradigm shift, including small business management software in the cloud, will always be paired with hype and confusion, so he is not surprised to see the results, even among professionals in IT.
He added that all clouds are simply not created equally and that there is still a "significant amount" of uncertainty, doubt and fear surrounding data security and financial payback issues.
Mr Steele said: "Given the increasing number of SaaS [software-as-a-service0 email security and compliance solutions available and differences in data security, service level agreements, effectiveness and ease-of-use, enterprises must conduct their due diligence when moving these types of functions to the cloud."
Despite this, Gartner believes that cloud computing will go far, based on the forecast of an 18 per cent growth in its uptake during 2009.
