Cloud computing still has 'way to go' in energy efficiency stakes

Small business management software is a great investment though must prove itself more to the eco-driven crowd, it is believed.

Andy Lawrence, research director, eco-efficient IT at the 451 Group, told the assembled delegates at the Green IT Expo 2009: "Cloud computing, which, certainly in our company, is considered to be the big IT trend of the decade, is partially being driven by eco IT concerns because the cloud model really suits energy efficiency."

He explained that it suits a number of business targets, such as financial prudence and a reduction of capital expenditure while also creating a very energy efficient way of building data centres.

However, Mr Lawrence believes that the technology is not as energy efficient as it makes out, with no providers truly delivering savings in that sense, even if there are many other financial incentives to do it.

Despite this, the expert asserted that it was at least pushing the industry in this direction and that this is a respectable situation for cloud computing.

The Green IT Expo, held last week at London's Barbican Centre, was aimed at helping senior IT and business decision-makers in identifying environmentally-friendly technologies and other innovations.
