SaaS 'needs prior planning'
Software-as-a-service (SaaS) is a big change to make and as such, it must be approached in the correct way, it has been said.
SearchCIO.com reported on the wide variety of best practices for a business to adopt when moving into the world of programs including resource scheduling software and online time billing, with the first being a large amount of prior planning and looking into companies with strong project management experience.
The cost of supporting each system much also be compared to its business value, emphasising which pieces of software can be cut from the bill.
Everybody must be on board with SaaS too, the report continued, noting that if backers pull out, those funding the scheme may also do so and further undermine the company's chances of doing well.
Mark Davenport, the director of IT at Bosley Medical Institute, said of the organisation's investment in SaaS: "The [licensing and maintenance fee] path we were on was very expensive.
"We are now always working on the latest version of everything [as far as applications], paying for it on a subscription basis, and we no longer have to maintain the applications or the hardware."
Earlier this week, John Appleby, the chairman of Saaspoint, explained that many experts have changed their attitude to SaaS and, despite the myths, are no longer intimidated or suspicious of it.
