Cumbrian village pioneers fast internet connections
An area of Cumbria may be particularly well placed to adopt a raft of small business management software after residents announced that they were assembling their own next-generation broadband connection.
The village of Alston Moor in the north-west county revealed to the Times this week that it is preparing to process broadband speeds of up to 20MBps, a speed faster than many towns in the UK have access to.
Basic broadband access was a tentative affair for a number of years in the area but with the new steps, the residents could be geared up for a better deployment of small business management software, digging their own trenches and investing in cables and a microwave link to a larger provider.
Nick Shaw, a retired businessman from London who lives in the area with his wife, said of the service: "People can't afford to buy in the countryside unless they can set up a business at home. Not having broadband is like not being able to read and write."
The Digital Britain report is currently in action across the UK, aiming to take the country into a new world of fibre-optic-based connections which the government hopes will boost competition and business.
