Businesses should 'turn to cloud computing soon'

Businesses should consider investing in the likes of project management software and resource scheduling software in the near future as it will make them better-placed, it is asserted.

Tom Bittman, vice-president and distinguished analyst at Gartner, said that a lot of companies are hoping to take advantage of the cost savings of software-as-a-service products, yet they must be harnessed as a stepping stone to wider communities.

"Many of the investments in private cloud computing will prepare the enterprise for public cloud computing. These investments are not just technology changes - they are also process, cultural and business interface changes."

He explained that by making these changes sooner rather than later, enterprises will be well-placed to take better cloud sourcing decisions in the near future while also preparing for an easier transition to public cloud technologies.

This week, Gartner announced that it was to buy AMR Research in a deal worth around $64 million (£38.5 million) in cash.
