SaaS 'continues to offer more'

It is easy to describe the benefits of business management software and other software-as-a-service (SaaS), according to one expert, though it continues to give more by the year.

Jim Metzler and Steve Taylor of Network World said that lower costs, easier access to applications and the faster implementation associated with the systems are undeniable, though many people are still not convinced.

They argued that when it was first proposed a decade ago, it was a "largely failed movement" to convince IT organisations that they should rent applications.

However, it is much more appealing now, as the on-demand provisioning of business management software is a major bonus, according to the experts, who added that this concept is "extremely important" if IT is to become completely agile.

"For example, in a traditional IT environment it can take weeks or even months to provision a new server," the pair concluded. "In a cloud computing environment, a new virtual machine can be implemented in seconds or minutes."

Last week, Mary Kay Roberto of the E-Commerce Times said that many people unfairly criticise SaaS for it being unsecure, when that is simply not the case.
