Fast broadband 'more important than universal connectivity'

Given the use of connection-heavy programs such as business management software, it stands to reason that the government focuses on upgrading connection speeds, it has been said.

Non-executive director at myvideorights.com Peter Bazalgette told the Westminster eForum and Media Forum keynote seminar the Future of Content Online that there is a conflict of opinion as to whether or not fast or universal broadband was more important.

He said that sadly, he does not believe that people can have both at the same time and at the same pace.

Mr Bazalgette continued: "Because of the state of our content industry and the state of our content in general, it's more important to have fast broadband than it is to have universal broadband and I would like to see this government put more emphasis on fast broadband and less on universal broadband."

In the recent study of next-generation broadband by the Organisation of Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), the UK was placed 21st out of the 30 developed countries studied in terms of speed.
