Users may incur broadband penalties over Christmas, survey shows

New research has revealed that almost a third of British broadband households will watch more online TV over the Christmas period this year than any other, putting broadband connections - and access to business management software - at risk.

The research, carried out by Broadbandchoices.co.uk, concluded that the growing number of online TV fans raises a range of major issues that bill-payers need to be aware of, such as fair usage and speed restrictions for those who use it a lot.

Michael Phillips, the product director at Broadbandchoices.co.uk, argued that once broadband users have passed their download limit or fair usage terms as set out by their provider, they will not be able to simply "plead ignorance" in order to avoid the consequences of their actions.

He concluded: "With the whole family at home and using online services this Christmas, we strongly urge broadband customers to start monitoring their levels of downloading - otherwise they could end up paying out for more than just presents this festive season."

Launched in 2005, Broadbandchoices.co.uk is one of the UK's leading Ofcom-accredited broadband comparison calculators.
