SaaS is taking the market 'at right time'

One of the major highs of technology in the last year has been online business management software, according to a new report.

Speaking on behalf of V3.co.uk, IT experts Iain Thomson and Shaun Nichols evaluated the popularity of hosted IT solutions and concluded that it was one of the top five best developments of the last 12 months.

Mr Thomson argued that software-as-a-service (SaaS) is being sold as a cost-saver, which naturally appeals to the majority of companies in a recession, while the marginal cost of new clients is relatively low, meaning scalability is a great ability.

He concluded: "But when you come down to it, SaaS has been rather lucky. Just as the industry was coming to maturity, a recession kicked in and it found it had a selling point that few can resist."

Earlier in the year, Gartner listed hosted IT services such as project management software as number one in its top ten strategic technologies of 2010.
