Cloud computing is the 'phrase du jour'

Cloud computing is "all the rage", according to one expert who believes that a Gartner analysis of the term as the "phrase du jour" is particularly correct.

Eric Knorr of InfoWorld agreed that words spoken by Gartner senior analyst Ben Pring ring true with the fast developing world of cloud computing, which business management software such as resource scheduling software is associated with.

Mr Knorr believes that the meaning is "bigger and fuzzier" than many people realise, though essentially limitless in that it can broadly be applied to any technologies found outside of traditional legacy software, or the traditional firewall.

He added that cloud computing truly comes into focus when you see it as a way to increase capacity or capabilities without investing in a new infrastructure, training new staff or licensing extra software.

"Cloud computing encompasses any subscription-based or pay-per-use service that, in real time over the Internet, extends IT's existing capabilities," Mr Knorr added.

SaaS is predicted to expand in 2010, with Jamie Erbes of HP Software & Solutions telling Processor magazine that even more viable applications will hit the scene soon.
