Government starts open consultation over £1bn broadband
A government consultation has opened up concerning the proposed £1 billion broadband fund raised via a 50p per month tax on all telephone landlines.
Opened by business secretary Lord Mandelson, the strategy - which will likely impact on future business management software and its improved speeds - is intended to make sure that 90 per cent of the UK will be able to access superfast broadband speeds of up to 50Mb within the next seven years.
The UK's most rural locations will be targeted first and foremost by the strategy.
Lord Mandelson said of the plans: "Already the market is delivering superfast internet speeds of 50Mb to half the country but we cannot be certain that it will reach the communities that are not currently served, which is why we are putting in an extra £1 billion to support the market"
Gordon Brown is fully behind the plans as a key motivator for businesses around the country.
