Cloud computing 'shouldn't be rushed into'

There will likely be no year of cloud computing, so businesses should take stock of their current requirements and go into business management software with a clear agenda, according to one expert.

Art Wittman, a blogger with Network Computing, asserted that instead of one year being a huge turning point for hosted software, there will instead be a "decade or so of hashing out what works and what doesn't".

He explained that while only a few IT professionals will cling to the status quo, it doesn't take too long to realise in the business that there is a lot of innovation for innovation's sake and this will not help a company for this reason alone.

As a result, a "steady evolution of systems and processes done in close conjunction with your business partners" will not exactly impress the bloggers and columnists around the world, but it is the best way to approach the likes of project management software, he concluded.

Despite this, Gartner - the world's biggest global consultancy for IT - predicted cloud computing and business management software to be one of its top ten strategic technologies of 2010.
