Manchester to embrace more business management software?

Manchester is the latest area of the UK to announce major plans to boost its internet speeds over the coming months.

Around 500 business and 1,000 residential homes in the area will benefit from the £1 million project, funded by the North West Development Agency to become a target for further broadband network implementations across the UK.

It is hoped that better business opportunities in the area could have the network paying for itself over time, and the increased connectivity could boost small business management software uptake.

Chris Smedley, the chief executive of Geo - which is behind the fibre-optic plans - said: "It will allow home working, telemedicine, video calling and net-based services on TV. It could completely revolutionise the way computers are used.

"Consumer devices won't have to be as big because they won't have to store so much. They won't crash so often and data will be more secure."

Yesterday (January 14th), the UK was named the 26th-fastest place in the world for broadband following a global survey carried out by Akamai.
