Mobile cloud computing is 'booming'

Mobile and smartphones will power the use of business management software over the coming months, according to an industry expert.

Steve Reynolds, the chairman of the Mobile Data Association, explained that the mobile industry is better positioned to "exploit, utilise and deploy" cloud-based business management software more than the server and infrastructure industry as it is a connective device.

He said the industry brings a huge flexibility of scale to enterprise mobility solutions providers that they would not get with a hosting provider, noting that it is cost-based on usage and not a basic leased model deal.

"I think enterprise mobility and mobile solutions are ideally placed to harness cloud computing and take it and accelerate it to a good commercial conclusion, and I think they'll do this far sooner than the fixed server and desktop environment," Mr Reynolds concluded.

Despite this, cloud computing is still not at the top of many organisations' agenda, with Symantec putting it behind server consolidation, storage virtualisation, data centre consolidation and data de-duplication.
