Tories back 100Mbps super-fast broadband plan
The Conservatives have followed the Labour plans to establish a fast internet connection in all homes in the UK by claiming they will deliver a "nationwide super-fast broadband", with part of it being possibly funded by the BBC licence fee.
George Osborne, the shadow chancellor, said a Tory government would be able to deliver speeds of up to 100Mbps in the "majority" of homes by 2017, adding that the cabling of rural areas could be paid for by a range of private investors, adding that the licence fee involvement would make up shortfalls.
However, the Conservatives were accused of playing "catch-up" on broadband improvements already set down by the Labour government, who has set a target for homes to have access to speeds of 2Mbps by 2012.
George Osborne said: "In the 19th century we built the railways. In the 20th century we built the motorways. In the 21st century, let's build the super-fast broadband network that will create hundreds of thousands of jobs for Britain."
A recent mobile broadband survey by the YouGov Dongle Tracker survey concluded that Orange is the best provider for the second year in a row.
