Whitehall will turn to the cloud 'out of necessity'
The government is looking to find more cost-effective ways of delegating core services for computing, with the option of business management software certainly cropping up, according to a new report.
This is according to silicon.com, who found that the G-Cloud project - establishing a cloud computing server for the government - will be launched in earnest in 2010.
Propositions for the first phase of design work on the G-Cloud will be finished this month, while government chief intelligence officer John Suffolk said that the first public sector departments will begin hosting some systems on a test version during this year.
Mr Suffolk told the publication: "We have to deliver this 20 per cent saving by hook or by crook by 2013/14.
"I think that it is one of the levers. Whether we like it or not, there is an economic reality that begins to accelerate projects that drive out cost."
Last year, Gartner named cloud computing as its key development technology for 2010, notably due to the cost savings it can bring.
