Small business management software faces 'biggest challenge' from security

Transforming the way that IT security is understood and approached by businesses in order to protect the cloud is a huge test for consumers and providers alike, according to a leading expert from Trend Micro.

Rik Ferguson, a senior security advisor at the company, spoke to the assembled delegates from around the UK who attended the Westminster eForum Keynote Seminar on cloud computing and business management software.

He explained that the likes of virtualisation and multi-tenancy storage area networks are the engines which power the cloud and someone must standardise a way to secure them.

Mr Ferguson concluded that in situations "where you won't necessarily know at any given point in time where the system is or where the data is, it means that we as consumers of cloud, we as security providers, need to rethink our security model, and I think this is probably the biggest challenge."

It follows a report from Trend Micro that cybercriminals could attempt to manipulate the connection to the cloud or attack data centres, though providers pride themselves on their security.
