SaaS is 'obvious next big trend'

Software-as-a-service (SaaS) will be the next big trend, according to an expert in the world of technology.

Enrique Salem of Symantec spoke to journalists at the company's worldwide headquarters at Mountain View in the Bay Area including the Hindu Business Line, explaining that while many perceive that it will change the world overnight, it is simply not true - though SaaS is important, it is also over-hyped.

Large companies spend billions of pounds on infrastructure, he noted, adding that Symantec predicts that 15 per cent of its total revenue will be made from business management software in the SaaS mould over the next five years.

He said that while it may not be important for small businesses to come to Symantec, "large companies are definitely looking at this service" and that "Symantec therefore is more focused on what the companies need to run the service".

However, SaaS and business management software can only subscribe to laws, in turn ensuring "security, availability, latency, regulation" as many governments have data privacy regulation and rules, with the likes of Switzerland being quite tough.

Trevor Dearing, the head of enterprise marketing for Juniper Networks in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, told delegates at Data Centre World's 'Is Data Centre Security Obscured by the Cloud?' that businesses need to focus on getting the best quality of security on their network if they adopt SaaS.
