SaaS infrastructure 'could be great for local governments'

A local government expert in the US has highlighted what such organisations would be willing to change if it meant they could reap the rewards of business management software.

Dan Lohrmann, the chief technology officer for the state of Michigan, told Computerworld that he is launching a range of pilot programs where the state will offer branded virtualisation options to institutions as a way of helping them all save money.

He argued that while every state believes they are unique, they are not, though this does not mean they are special.

However, every state is facing a difficult budget at the moment and Mr Lohrmann believes this is the biggest galvanising force for such technology.

"If someone said you could do X, Y and Z for half the price with SaaS, but you'd need to change this [data] field or that field in an application, I think you'd all of a sudden see that those unique requirements would not be as important," he concluded.

The Epoch Times recently reported that an investment in SaaS makes extremely good business sense, especially in that the user does not have to worry about upgrading legacy servers or software.
