Broadband restrictions 'forcing youngsters to leave rural areas'
The government is today (March 4th) being informed that the long-term future of rural areas in the UK is under threat because many young people are being forced out of rural areas to find homes, jobs and support.
Dr Stuart Burgess, the government's appointed rural advocate, combined the evidence he has gathered from communities in all parts of England's countryside which look into the aspirations and challenges of a young rural England.
He argued that one of the biggest issues in the countryside, which also affects companies when using business management software, is the lack of good broadband speeds, which will gradually be addressed by the government's Digital Britain scheme.
This, the expert believes, is one technological facet instrumental in the decline of younger people in small towns and villages across the UK.
Dr Burgess said: "Without young people to provide a work force, rural economies are unable to fulfil their full potential and rural communities can go into a decline."
The report was produced by the Commission for Rural Communities, which was established in April 2005 and became an independent body on October 1st 2006, following the enactment of the Natural Environment and Rural Communities Act 2006.
