Google: Desktop will be dead in three years time

The desktop PC will be dead in three years, according to Google's vice president of global ad operations John Herlihy in a recent conversation with Silicon Republic.

Mr Herlihy explained that mobile devices will make the world's information "universally accessible" in the future and that Google itself is pushing itself towards the realms of mobile, cloud and connectivity markets, as well as business management software.

Despite this, an expert in the field of computing has argued that it will be much the same as before, though the devices which we use to access technology will be different.

Cliff Saran, managing editor of Computer Weekly magazine, said: "People will still run desktop applications, but they'll be run on much smaller devices; thin client devices.

"Thin client software - basically web software - requires the persistence of connection to the internet, otherwise it just doesn't work."

He added that wherever there is a concern with security, there will be a worry that the application and its internet access will be restricted.
