Microsoft is 'putting future efforts' into cloud computing

The chief executive of Microsoft is so comfortable with the notion of business management software that he and the company are to point themselves in the direction of cloud computing, potentially staking the company's success on the developing model.

News came through to employees of the world's largest software group from Steve Ballmer directly in an email, in which he said the company was going to tap "so much unrealised potential" from the market.

He explained that the new direction would fuel investments across the entire company, ranging from data centres to cloud platform technologies and cloud-based development tools.

He added: "Today, nearly every one of our products has, or is developing, features or services that support the cloud.

"As I said today, when it comes to the cloud, we are all in. We are all in across every product line we have and across every dimension of the cloud."

Steve Ballmer took control as chief executive officer of Microsoft in January 2000, taking over duties from Bill Gates.
