Questions 'must be asked' before starting SaaS use

Businesses must fully address their boundaries and security when using small business management software on the internet, according to one expert.

Jan Valcke, president and chief operating officer of VASCO Data Security, said: "IT departments have genuine concerns about security when implementing SaaS: how secure are these hosted applications?

"After all, your data resides somewhere on a server hosted by the vendor."

She told businesses to ask themselves about the measures the vendor takes to make sure that the infrastructure is sufficiently stable, as well as security of the access to the infrastructure itself.

Furthermore, Ms Vackle said that if using a simple log-in and password system to access important data, it must be asked whether or not it will provide the company with good protection against data theft through phishing and key-logging.

Recently, Dana Blankenhorn, a business journalist working with ZDNet, explained that with software-as-a-service (SaaS) is perfect for businesses and institutions in the healthcare industry.
