New chip 'aids SaaS'
Small business management software such as online time billing could receive quite the boost from a recently-released chip upgrade provided by Intel.
The organisation revealed that its Xeon processor 5600 series has been designed for working well with data centres that host services such as software-as-a-service (SaaS), focusing on faster encryption and decryption performance.
Vice-president and general manager of the Intel Architecture Group Kirk Skaugen said of the product: "The Intel Xeon Processor 5600 series will be the backbone of mainstream computing environments.
He continued: "Improvements in performance, server virtualisation and power consumption will foster productivity and efficiency for a broad range of applications ranging from data transactions to workstations performing medical imaging and digital prototyping."
This week, Rob Lovell, the chief executive officer of ThinkGrid, said that knowledge of SaaS and assets such as deliverable resource scheduling software has become much more widespread in recent months, and that the acceleration of this trend is growing.
