Could separate networks help boost firms' data centre efficiency?

Separate networks could be better in terms of resilience and efficiency than converged ones, an expert has suggested, which could benefit business management software users.

James Cole, director of Keysource, has commented on Gartner research to this effect that uptime has been the key consideration for many firms but that at some point it becomes more useful to consider the number of data centres in place.

Gartner suggested that a converged data centre network could be less efficient than two well-designed separate networks, as where these are overlaid on a single infrastructure there are significant increases in complexity.

Projects over the last ten to 15 years have prioritised the uptime of a single facility but companies could increasingly look to minimise the effect that an inevitable period of downtime will have by spreading their resources, he acknowledged.

Mr Cole added that it is impossible to get 100 per cent uptime and that, at some point, the small increase in this will be outweighed by the cost of achieving it.

He said: "We're all in favour of replicating the number of data centres to build resilience into your infrastructure."
