Home working is 'great alternative' for employees

With expected rail strikes and the possibility of mass absenteeism in the workplace, an expert has offered businesses advice on how to manage when key people are unable to do their job in the office.

Martin Caddick, leader of risk and business continuity management services at PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP (PwC), highlighted how business management software such as online time billing could really help organisations manage their virtual office, keeping it on par with internal operations.

He said that making it possible for employees to work from home is a "great solution" and costs little to implement.

"Working at home instead of coming into the office is increasingly used as a business continuity strategy," Mr Caddick continued. "In this winter's snowstorms, one major UK company estimated they saved 7,000 working days by enabling their staff to do just this."

He said that it was also helpful if anything should happen to the organisation's computers or office space generally.

Today (March 22nd) PwC asserted that two in five workers will watch 2010 World Cup matches screened in office hours.
