Cloud computing helps Miami recover from losses
Instead of making even bigger cuts to meet budget deficits, the city of Miami's IT managers have begun looking at the possibilities of cloud computing technology and how it could be used to maintain popular services and generate money for the city, it has been revealed.
A recent report for Computerworld explained that cuts in recent months reduced the Floridian city's IT payroll from just over 100 to just 80, and it was noted that any further downsizing plans could lead to drastic service cuts and internal morale problems.
Included in the business management software package is an online application allowing residents to monitor the status of requests for services including the impounding of abandoned vehicles, pothole repairs or investigations into code violations.
It is now hoped that offerings can be adapted to sell to businesses in the area.
This month, it was announced that the first broadband-based cloud gaming platform, OnLive, will launch in the US on June 17th and if successful, it could be rolled out across the world.
