PITCOM: Education must match technological developments

Developments in technology such as cloud computing and business management software prove that education must match the exponential growth in pace of the market's development, it has been said.

Andrew Miller MP, chair of the Parliamentary Information Technology Committee (PITCOM), made his comments to assembled delegates at the Westminster Education Forum Keynote Seminar: ICT at school and in the home.

He asserted that computing is becoming pervasive in homes across the country and that the quality of work coming out of children using such technology is "stunning".

Mr Miller noted that the UK must recognise how things have changed over time and that the nation will be faced with this challenge continually.

He concluded: "[It is] an extremely challenging problem. It took some time to persuade civil servants that there was a difference between students doing ICT and students studying ICT, but hopefully we'll get some shift in collective wisdom."

The Westminster Education Forum Keynote Seminar took place at the Royal Society, London on March 26th and examined the use of ICT within Britain's schools.
