CIPD welcomes review of Working Time Directive

The new government has the chance to review the Working Time Directive, which one major organisation is hoping it will make good use of.

According to the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD), the application of the directive needs to be limited to keep the effect on businesses to a minimum.

Director of the CIPD Stephanie Bird commented: "Maintenance of the UK’s growing flexible working culture offers the prospect of a far greater contribution to well-being and work-life balance than the kind of regulatory approach embodied in the Working Time Directive."

She added that the flexible labour market has served the country well in times of economic uncertainty, so measures need to be taken to ensure this continues.

Under the directive, adult workers should not be forced to work more than an average of 48 hours a week, which is averaged-out over the course of 17 weeks.

Businesses can ensure they are complying with this by using time sheet tracking software.
