Employers urged to be flexible during World Cup

Employers need to be flexible throughout the World Cup to avoid getting themselves into legal difficulties, it has been suggested.

The Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) and Abbey Legal Protection advised coming to arrangements with staff before the tournament starts so both sides know the terms and conditions.

For example, the groups suggested granting unpaid leave or allowing employees to make up time by starting work earlier or leaving later, which can be monitored through time tracking software.

It is also important for employers not to presume that everyone will be supporting England, or that everyone who wants to watch the matches will be male.

Mike Cherry, policy chairman of the FSB, commented: "Being prepared will let everyone benefit fully from the tournament and ultimately enjoy it."

The FSB recently welcomed plans outlined in the Queen's Speech to safeguard jobs and secure investment for the roll-out of high-speed broadband connections.
