Use of unpaid workers 'must be regulated'
Firms may find time tracking software of particular use as one expert has warned against over-using unpaid workers.
Dan Hawes, co-founder of the Graduate Recruitment Bureau, highlighted that many people are keen to make it in their chosen industry and gain experience for their CV.
However, some employers may take advantage of their enthusiasm and end up effectively exploiting these people, he warned.
"What the CIPD recommends is that the very minimum you pay is three months' worth of expenses and then after that you pay the going rate [which is] what someone who is doing it full-time would be paid," Mr Hawes explained.
He added that by doing something for nothing, an individual is entering into an agreement, but it is up to them to ensure the terms and conditions are above board.
The Trades Union Congress found earlier this year that as many as one in three interns are not being paid for their work, despite qualifying for the minimum wage.
