Employers clamping down on poor timekeeping

Employers across the country are now paying more attention to timekeeping as a result of economic pressures.

This is according to a new survey from CareerBuilder.co.uk, which found 39 per cent of businesses are now being more alert to people arriving late.

Emphasising the need for timesheet software, the study discovered that workers were nevertheless keen to mislead their employers as to why they were late turning up.

Among the most creative excuses named by employers were that people had difficulty adjusting from winter to summer, that a cat had been stuck in a flap and that the employee was busy putting a stop to a burglary.

"Arriving late can impact perceptions of your professionalism and reliability not only in the eyes of your employer, but in the eyes of your co-workers who may have to pick up the slack," said Tony Roy, managing director of the firm.

Research from the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy recently showed that an increasing number of people are working through their lunch hours and failing to take sufficient breaks.
