Absence policies 'help reduce bogus sick days'

Businesses need to consider putting effective absence policies in place to avoid staff taking sick days without needing to, it has been said.

Sue Hayday, senior research fellow at the Institute for Employment Studies, revealed that measures such as back to work chats will help reduce unnecessary absences.

"Non-genuine absence due to domestic responsibilities or problems should be tackled by flexible working arrangements, such as being able to work from home," she suggested.

This could also be complemented by allowing them to start and finish work at different hours, or making up the time at a later date, Ms Hayday added.

Employers may be able to make use of time billing software to keep track of workers who have unnecessary amounts of time off.

The working age economic inactivity rate was 21.5 per cent in the three months to April, figures from the Office for National Statistics show.
