Managers 'must ensure staff do not overwork'
Time tracking software could be key for managers assessing whether their staff are achieving an appropriate work-life balance when working from home.
The idea behind flexible and remote working is to encourage employees to have a better work-life balance, according to the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD).
However, CIPD senior public policy advisor Ben Willmott explained that sometimes people find it difficult to switch off and draw a barrier between their work and home lives.
He said: "If, as a manager, you're finding that employees are sending emails in the middle of the night or on holiday, you should be saying, 'Look, I admire your commitment, but really you need to be able to switch off, because long-term it won't do you any good and long-term it will be undermining your health and your productivity'."
His comments follow the publication of research by the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy, which indicates that one in four people in the UK regularly work all day without taking a break.
