FSB: Maternity, paternity pay in need of overhaul

Statutory maternity and paternity pay is in need of clarification to make the process easier for employers and their workers to understand, one group has suggested.

The Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) noted that this is one of the most complicated issues for the country's workplaces, so changes must be made.

A study carried out by the organisation showed half of small businesses believe maternity leave is one of the most difficult areas to administer, which may also be the case for time billing software users.

John Walker, national chairman of the FSB, said: "Laws surrounding maternity and paternity leave are complex and confusing to administer and can act as a barrier to small firms taking on new staff simply because they do not understand the burdensome system."

The FSB recently predicted that record numbers of people will become self-employed this year as unemployment continues to remain a problem in the UK.
