Flexible working legislation 'an interference'

Formalising flexible working rights through implementing legislation is unlikely to be a positive move, it has been claimed.

Andrew Cave, head of policy at the Federation of Small Businesses, noted that many firms are already allowing flexible working conditions, perhaps keeping tabs on employees with time tracking software.

Legislation is therefore likely to cause upset for companies, he stressed, at a time when they do not need any more regulations to comply with.

"What that is actually doing is having the state coming in and interfering by coming in between the employee and employer and formalising that relationship," he explained.

Mr Cave highlighted that it may prove difficult to prove to the government that legislation is not needed.

According to a survey of 1,000 office workers in London conducted by Credant Technologies, 95 per cent take mobiles and smartphones abroad with the expectation of working.
