Unpaid overtime 'a reality' for many workers

Working overtime unpaid is becoming increasingly common in UK workplaces, it has been noted.

Chief executive officer of Work Wise UK Phil Flaxton indicated that in some cases, 50-hour weeks are being undertaken by staff, prompting the need for time tracking software.

"With the cost of redundancy being as expensive as it is in many cases, I'm sure there are unscrupulous employers out there that would put undue and unlawful pressure on staff," he continued.

Mr Flaxton highlighted that in a time of economic uncertainty, there will be some unrest in the employment sector over the coming months.

High-profile strike action such as that proposed by BAA shows this, the expert added.

According to official figures from the Office for National Statistics, between April and June the number of people in work jumped by 184,000.

This figure included a record number of part-time workers, taking the total to 7.84 million.
