Mac threats increasing, says expert

The past 12 to 28 months has seen a rise in the number of Mac users faced with security threats, an expert has identified.

Rik Ferguson, solutions architect for Trend Micro, warned small business software users that the criminals are generally the same as those targeting PCs.

"We're certain because we've seen malicious web pages where if you visit a webpage from a PC you get PC malware and if you visit from a Mac you get Mac malware," he explained.

Mr Ferguson pointed out that criminals operate in order to make money, so are unlikely to care what sort of device they are dealing with.

IBM's X-Force security threat report for the first half of 2010 lists Apple, Microsoft and Adobe Systems as the top three makers of products with the most vulnerabilities.

Overall, 4,396 new vulnerabilities were documented by the X-Force Research and Development team during the first six months of the year.
