Google aims to make an impact on VoIP market
Google's entry into the VoIP market could spell an interesting time for other providers such as Skype, small business software users have been informed.
Steve Hilton, principal analyst at Analysys Mason, revealed that the company will aim to encourage people towards taking advantage of their mobile devices and away from traditional services.
He commented: "I think Skype benefits by Google continuing to shift the emphasis away from the old-fashioned telephone toward voice over other devices."
Mr Hilton pointed out that there is little financial incentive for the search giant to get people to take up its VoIP services, but other providers may well reap the benefits.
The expert stressed: "I think Skype benefits by Google continuing to shift the emphasis away from the old-fashioned telephone toward voice over other devices."
He doubted that existing Skype users would jump to the Google service entirely, instead suggesting that they may try it out to see how it compares.
The Gmail voice-calling feature logged more than one million calls in the first 24 hours, according to its Twitter feed.
